How to dress up as a scary clown

Scary clowns have been a popular costume since the 1990s when creepy clowns were used a lot in movies and TV series. Pennywise from It is the most popular scary clown outfit to wear at Halloween. 

You can dress up as a scary clown easily by following our instructions below:-

Clothing

Men can wear a colourful onesie or dungarees with a shirt underneath. Women can wear a white or a white and black dress. Typically a clown will wear white, black, or red. Pennywise wears a white onesie outfit.

Shoes

We recommend wearing black or white shoes as these will not distract from the rest of your look.

Makeup

For makeup, we recommend using face paints to turn your face white and then completing long vertical shapes around the eyes. Most crazy clown makeup includes red lipstick and/or face paints around the mouth. 

Pennywise has red vertical lines above and below the eye. The character from It also has a painted on a big red smile using lipstick and/or face paints.

Nose

You can either put on a red clown nose or use red face paint to colour in the end of the nose near the nostril. 

Hair

Scary clowns usually have a wig of some kind. The Pennywise character had bright red hair.
